Batman v Superman is Epic Yet Underwhelming

I can safely say that this film is one of the most expected and hyped films in a while, with the obvious exception of ‘The Force Awakens’. For the last couple of years we have been watching teasers and trailers, as we waited patiently for the big day to come. The day we would be able to see the battle between two of the biggest (arguably the biggest) superheroes that ever existed. Oh, well, that day is finally upon us.

After years of anticipation Warner Bros., and DC are finally realising their sequel to the highly controversial ‘Man of Steel’. In ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ Clark Kent is joined by Bruce Wayne (and Diana Prince) in an attempt to expand it’s cinematic universe and leave their last film’s controversy behind once and for all. The films follows Batman and Superman, for 2 and a half hours, as they fight each other, for a total of 10 minutes.
Now, don’t get me wrong here, I actually liked this movie and must admit I had fun watching it, at least for a good portion of it. So, let’s get into the good things first. This film is beautiful, it’s cinematography is nearly jaw-dropping at times. With Zack Snyder as the director, it is expected to have great visuals but he definitely outdid himself this time! Another thing this film excels at is connecting Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne to this new cinematic universe. Wonder Woman is also an amazing character, the way she is written makes you even more interested and excited to see her stand alone film. Honestly, Wonder Woman’s theme score is one of the best things I have ever listened to. Actually, the entire score is incredible. It is Oscar material score, that’s what it is.

When it comes to the acting, Ben Affleck kills as both Bruce Wayne and Batman. He pulls off being incredibly charming as Bruce and just as much badass as Batman. He pretty much delivers in every aspect, being quite possibly the best thing about this movie. I am not the biggest Henry Cavill fan, but he is great Superman, he does the best he can with what he is given. Amy Adams is also great as Lois Lane, even though the script doesn’t necessarily gives her the best things to do. I personally also enjoyed Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal of Lex Luthor, he was equally weird and fascinating to me. And last, but not least, Gal Gadot did okay playing Wonder Woman. She’s in no way the best part of it, but she’s not the worst either.
However, the film did have plenty of negatives, the biggest for me being it’s editing. The editing is very poorly done, and it takes you out of the movie multiple times. It is very easy to see where there was something missing on a scene, or where you could take out parts of the film. The editing is so sloppy sometimes, that it can confuse you on what’s going on in the movie. It’s tone is also all over the place, what together with a very long runtime makes the film feel boring and confusing at times. The script starts out incredible, but somehow takes a turn with plenty of plot holes, plot devices and inconsistent character actions.

The movie focuses greatly in setting up this new cinematic universe and it's attempt to do is not creative or interesting at all. With the exception of Wonder Woman and the Flash, all the others cameos are shown in the worst way possible. The film literally stops so we can see the rest of the justice league. It's humour attempts also don't work at all, I would rather them kept the dark tone and didn't try to put jokes in that don't make nay kind of sense. The whole joke we see in the trailer, the "Is she with you" joke, does not work at all. It doesn't make sense to the scene.

I hate to compare this to any Marvel property out there, especially ‘The Avengers’. BvS is only the second movie in this new DC cinematic universe, whilst ‘The Avengers’ was the sixth film in Marvel’s cinematic universe. If you really feel the need to compare Marvel and DC, the movie you should compare BvS with is ‘The Incredible Hulk’, which (let’s be honest here) is one of the worst films in the MCU. ‘Batman v Superman’ is in many ways a superior movie to ‘The Incredible Hulk’.

At the end of the day, BvS delivers in it’s battles scenes and visual aspects in an epic way, but fails to tell a good story with it’s sloppy editing and mediocre script. It tries very hard to be one consistent film, when in reality it feels more like three or four movies combined into one. This film is no ‘Fantastic Four’ in it’s errors, and it’s no ‘Dark Knight’ in it’s achievements. It is an enjoyable film, but it will leave you underwhelmed at the end of it. It’s not good, and it’s not bad, it is just okay.

5.5/10 - Okay
